[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen is now holding signs ups on LiveJournal here! [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen is a multifandom fanfiction exchange designed around rare women in large and small fandoms, with the aim to increase the amount of gen, het, femslash and poly fics featuring these characters. Here's the full list of nominated fandoms and female characters you can choose from.

The challenge requires that one of the fandoms you request must be one of their nominated “large” fandoms -- luckily, Hikaru no go counts as one! And there are three fantastic female characters nominated that you can request!
Hikaru no Go: Fujisaki Akari, Kaneko Masako, Nase Asumi
A brief summary of these girls:

Akari, Kaneko and Nase )

Two years ago, we had a meta thread here at [community profile] hikarunogo devoted to the female characters in Hikago, where people shared their thoughts about these characters and also left quite a lengthy rec list!

List of recs )

We hope [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen will bring us even more fics for these three women!

To celebrate these awesome ladies, the mods would like to declare a LOVE FEST meme!

Ao3 has just implemented RSS feeds! I've created one for dreamwidth here!

http://hikago-on-ao3-feed.dreamwidth.org/

It does show backdated entries just added too! (They've also implemented subscription for individual stories, in addition to the previous author subscription! :D)

(Just for your reference, following links to the works places less stress on the servers - their currently getting 1 million + hits every day! o_o )

so what about that hanyou? )

~Happy Lunar New Year~

So as most of us Hikaru no Go fans know, there is occasionally imagery of Tiger Vs Dragon comes up, with Sai saying that Akira had his claws out, and he wondered what kind of claws they would grow up to be.

This is, I feel is part of the set up for epic rivalry, with a build up to Hikaru eventually becoming Akira's destined rival and his opposite. :D

Image from series~ )

To plagiarise summarise wikipedia1:

Tigers are the eternal rival to the dragon, and are shown in many fighting an epic battle.

In a lot of sports/martial art series/ sports commentators, they use the term Tiger Vs Dragon to describe equal but different rivals.

In Martial Arts, "Dragon style" is used to describe styles of fighting based more on understanding movement, while "Tiger style" is based on brute strength and memorisation of techniques.

The two push each other, as their strength is the other's weakness.

I don't think it was ever explicitly mentioned in the series which one Akira was and consequently as his opposite, who is Hikaru?

So to celebrate the Year of the Dragon, let's discuss which one we think it is here! :D
Some links to previous discussions (I know there are more but can't find them right now)

Edit: A frantic search of my backups turned up the full (not split) file. That will do. *relieved*

Heeding the call to action, I posted my podfic/narration of A Proof By Contradiction to AO3.

Then I realized: the files were all hosted on Megaupload. As you may or may not have heard, Megaupload was taken down.

I do NOT have the original files. The only mirror, which was on private hosting kindly provided by a friend, has since disappeared, too. OH NO. >_<

If anyone has a copy of my narration, I would be VERY GRATEFUL?

As a fore-note, I just want to say that we the moderators are really super excited about some of the things that we have planned for this year!!! We have a swarm of emails of things we'd like to see. :D One of the hard things is going to be spacing everything out appropriately. (And doing the preparation, XD)

I feel like this year has a lot of Hikago things to look forward to, [personal profile] hostilecrayon has an epic rewatch which is starting the public planning here, but also not just here but with [livejournal.com profile] ihikago and [livejournal.com profile] blind_go and a bunch of pan fandom thing some of which we mention here... and on that note, care to join the squee/recruitment for hikaru no go for "not prime time" here? :D ? :D ? :D ?

Must be something in the air preparing for the year of the Dragon, preparing for a epic battle ahead~

And one of the other things that I've found exciting in Hikago, is happening on Archive of our own (Ao3), right now! ^_^

In the comments to the last post, [personal profile] qem_chibati pointed out some other panfandom activities and challenges that we could invade bring Hikago to, and I thought they could use some more attention.

Running now

Running on a slightly tighter timescale than [livejournal.com profile] ihikago, [community profile] chromatic_podfic is running its second annual challenge, and any podfics for Hikago will automatically qualify. Sign ups are open now until January 28! (Disclaimer: I mod [community profile] chromatic_podfic so yes, this is completely self-interested.)

[community profile] fancake, a themed multifandom recs community, is collecting fic recs with Established Relationships until February 15. There's already been some recs for Hikago, but let's add more! All your favorite "Akira and Hikaru are so married" stories should count.

Coming soon

Porn Battle XIII opens for prompting on January 28...let's try to leave some prompts for our fandom!

banner for Porn Battle XIII

And later down the line, there's [community profile] not_primetime, a fic exchange for medium-sized fandoms, coming up in April.

In the meanwhile, let us know if there's anything else going on we should be linking to!

Hikago fans: in ur challenge...bringin' the igo. XD

[livejournal.com profile] ihikago is running its fifth round. Readers can sign up until January 24. Authors can give permission for their fics to be recorded at any time.

[community profile] eastasianfandomgiftbag is a wishlist exchange that's been running for the past two months, but you still have until the end of January to fill any prompts/requests on people's wishlists. Here are the wishlists that include Hikaru no Go: manga: hikaru no go, anime: hikaru no go.

Are there any other panfandom challenges or activities going on that could include Hikago fans? Leave links in the comments!

[personal profile] qem_chibati posting reminded me that I have not really done a good job of keeping the community active. But since there are a lot more people being active on Dreamwidth nowadays, I'd like to make a renewed attempt. ^^

Last year, people mentioned being interested in having more rec posts on this comm, and so we collected our favorite fics of 2010. This year, how about all of the members of the comm rec themselves? Are there fics, fanart, FSTs, podfics, etc. that you've made that you're especially proud of? Share them here!

Also, I would like to take on another co-mod who would help out in making periodic posts to the comm and organizing community activities. (E.g., maybe another team drabblefest?) Please PM me if you're interested! ETA: Huge thanks to [personal profile] qem_chibati and [personal profile] hostilecrayon, who have kindly agreed to help mod this community!

I was recently thinking about this issue*, so I found it really interesting, looking at the latest xkdc comic, where it talks about the difficulty of games for computers, where it positioned Go and I though others might find it interesting too.

*i just reposted my blind go fic that was looking at the issue a little, and had been thinking about a sequel.

[personal profile] dorrie6, who runs Manga Bookshelf, hosted a roundtable discussion on Hikaru no Go in honor of Hikago Day and the release of the last volume in official English translation.

The site is also hosting the annual Let's Five Meme.

And fics are up for [livejournal.com profile] blind_go at Round 11: Directory!

(If there's anything I've missed, please drop links to any other May 5 fandom activities in the comments.)

Happy Hikago Day, everyone!

Apologies for having fallen off the community activity bandwagon, but I thought that [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw would be a good opportunity to get back on.

"Symbolism" was the meta topic that garnered the most votes in the poll I posted a while ago, so let's talk about symbolism in the series!

Some topics for discussion:

- Hikaru imagining the go board as the universe and the stones as stars
- tiger vs. dragon imagery to represent Hikaru and Akira's rivalry
- Sai using swordsmanship as a metaphor for playing go
- Hikaru's fan
- symbols used in Obata's art for the series (artbook scans, new complete editions)*
- character descriptors from the new complete editions (Hikaru = "the heir", Sai = "the ghost", Akira = "the seeker", Kaga = "the vagabond", Tsutsui = "the founder", Mitani = "the stray cat", Akari = "the neighbor", Waya = "the senior-apprentice", Ogata = "the prophet", Suyeong = "the pursuer", Isumi = "the wanderer", Ochi = "the little king", Touya Kouyou = "the master", Kurata = "the monster", Kuwabara = "the elder", Yang Hai = "the talent", Ashiwara = "the optimist", Nase = "the challenger", Yashiro = "the boldest", Zhao Shi = "the naturalist", Yeongha = "the pride", Shouji & Oka = "the buddies")
- is Sai's fear of frogs symbolic?
- is go itself symbolic?
- symbolic importance of any of these catchphrases: "the new wave", "room of profound darkness", "hand of god"
- theme of identity vs. anonymity/pseudonymity: NetGo, Sai as Hikaru's "shadow", Akira/Ogata/Touya Kouyou attempting to uncover Sai's "real" identity
- parallels in storyline, e.g. cheating by both Sai's rival at court and Mitani
- names as symbols, e.g. Hikaru, Akira and Akari all associated with "light"
- theme of tradition vs. modernity: clothes, Sai possessing Hikaru, "connecting the past to the future"

Feel free to jump in with discussion topics of your own!

* Anyone have links to scans from the second artbook, Blanc et Noir?
