[personal profile] phnx posting in [community profile] hikarunogo
This is a list of characters from Hikaru no Go as organised by Hikaru no Go: Gorgeous * Characters Guide. I tried to keep the formatting as similar to the original as possible while changing it to a non-picture-based blog post, but I'm not sure how much sense the captions make without their accompanying manga panels (in the distant future, I may start scanning the profile pages to deal with this). As I complete the translations of individual characters' profiles, I'll link them to their respective names in this entry. I'd prefer to complete the minor characters' entries first, but if there's a character you'd like to read the profile of first, feel free to request that one to be upped on the queue. I make no promises as to the regularity of my translation updates (I have no idea how much time I'll have in the upcoming year).

Below is also a link to the guide's Table of Contents, as typed and translated by me; from this you can see that the guide is also stacked full of extras (the sort that often fill the interim between chapters in Weekly Shounen Jump). However, I'm primarily interested in translating the character profiles. If anyone is desperate to read a section, I may consider adding it to the queue, but it's likely that those pages will remain untranslated. Please keep in mind that the guide was published before Hikaru no Go's Volume 18 was released, so any characters who came after Volume 17 are not included in the guide. I think it'd be cool if we could compile a fan-made profile for those characters, though ^^.

Finally, if anyone sees any mistakes in my translations/etc., I'd really appreciate it if you'd point them out. Special thanks to [personal profile] love for providing her own translations!

Haha. Oh yeah. I noticed. They were the first two I clicked on, too. XD

♥ Thanks! I'll think about it, but the only other characters I would really want aren't in the guide. I can be patient for everyone else. (Especially since you've already done Kaneko!)

Thank you! These are wonderful!

By the way, after reading some of these guides, I have a sort of go-related question that maybe someone could answer for me. I read through the on about Yang Hai and it says that Isumi got a two stone handicap against him when they played. But there was this huge thing in the manga when Touya was about 12 or 13 that he stopped getting handicap stones against his dad. And unless you tell me that Yang Hai secretly is the god of go I cannot believe that there was a so much bigger gap between Yang Hai and Isumi than there was between 13 year old Touya and his dad. So what is the deal with the handicap?

Heh, yeah, I feel I often make wild guesses about go when it comes to Hikaru no go:D But it does make sense that Touya would know his father's go better than anyone which probably would give him some edge.

Handicap stones can be used as part of a grade assessment in addition, to evening out a game.

I think in Touya's case it was about him having mastered the fundamentals and graduating to a real game as opposed to a teaching game. Akira probably loses all the time to his dad but doesn't care because it's a REAL game. The meijin is also probably better at playing teaching games without needing stones to give the advantage.

In Isumi's case, it's about building confidence.

That makes sense. Thank you!
