So while sign ups are still occuring for Hikaru no Go Rare Pairing Exchange I thought it might be fun to run a mini-event. (I'd be willing to throw in dreamwidth points as prizes.) The idea would be to have something quick to run, that wouldn't significantly take away from writing time for the event.

What Kind Of Mini Event Qem? You might ask.
Well that's what I'm asking you. ^.^;;

Option One: Battle Bingo
One of the events I've been thinking about redoing is the Battle Bingo Game we played a while back (You can see the game rules here & how the game played out here - one thing that would be different this time, is that I can actually get Ochibot to post to dreamwidth (in reply to a comment) while Qem is asleep, which would help make the game more fair. I was also thinking that we could maybe seperate the fills post from the tracking post, to encourage people to give feedback on any drabbles as they are reading along.)

Option Two: Trivia Questions
Well, Ochibot was originally designed to give out trivia questions in our chat room. It might be fun to have this on the community - the scoring would have to wait until Qem was awake though - Ochibot sometimes not very nice with his scoring in the chat, and it would probably not be a good idea to inflict that on the community directly.

Option Three: Meta Questions
Ochibot also has access to a list of meta questions [in the chat room you can run the command "/prompt meta" to get a question about hikaru no go] (which was also used for a different type of bingo we did a while back the list Ochi more or less has access to can be seen here). This I think would be much less formal than the others, but we could still gamify it up, with 1 point for every answer, +5 for first response +5 for being longer than 500 words, etc. :P

Option Four: Something else? I'm open to suggestions and while it might not be run now, it could be run at a later point in time.

So. erm. [personal profile] emeloh (who has just volunteered herself for volume 4 :3), quite rightly pointed out that I said a while back, when I first started talking about reread, that host didn't have to do spoiler posts if they didn't want to that it was up to them for how they wanted to control the reread for their period. I also agreed on one of the other points she made - I don't want to be adding additional workloads to the people who have been kind enough to volunteer to host or try to stiffle people from participating in the conversation.

This is true, although it is nice being able to let newbies know what's safe to read and not read at this point in the re-read, so I would like to encourage people to help keep spoilers hidden in the posts considered to be spoiler free.

Concequently, it's probably best if we don't have a - you shall only do spoilers in this method, but let people post whatever they find more convinient. You can get an idea of what the community prefers from this poll here: http://hikarunogo.dreamwidth.org/89967.html

I've added a copy of the code to do black on black text on the rot13 page I made, for ease of copy pasting here: http://chat.gogohikago.com/rot13.php and I'll update the FAQ soon. If anyone has any points they'd like to add or other suggestions on spoiler methods - well it's still up to discussion. ^.^;;

Additionally, volumes 5, 6 & 7 are still available for sign ups!

So it came up in one of the recent posts the suggestion to instead of rot13 spoiler posts (where letters are rotated by 13 - meaning that the same process to translate is to decode), we used black text with a black background.

Method 1:
Use of a website or an extension to code or decode.
http://chat.gogohikago.com/rot13.php

Or extensions such as:

Leetkey for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/leet-key/

D3coder for chrome https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/d3coder/gncnbkghencmkfgeepfaonmegemakcol?hl=en

Greasemonkey: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/60942

Example:

Fcbvyre: = Spoiler:

Method 2:
Spoiler text goes here

<span style="color:black; background:black;">Spoiler text goes here</span>

Method 3:

Super tiny text where we mark in advance it's a spoiler, so it's hard to read.

Spoiler! spoiler text conversation goes here.

Code:
Spoiler! <small><small><small>spoiler text conversation goes here.</small></small></small>

Manga Reread FAQ

Can I promote?

Yes please!

Can I share a volume with a friend for my sign up week?

Sure!

What are the minimum requirements to be a host for reread?

- the minimum requirement is at least one post during the two week period containing a summary of what occurs in that volume (or chapters indicated in the sign up post), and either questions or comentary as a starting point for a discussion on what occurs on that chapter, or questions - so that people have a chance to interact with you for the that period of the reread.

No really, what are the minimum requirements for participating? WHAT DO YOU WANT QEM?!

10:03:37 ‹Qem› This is what I want:
10:03:44 ‹Qem› To have lots of people participate and take turns!
10:03:52 ‹Qem› And not to stress out about what they're are doing.

Each host is likely to do things a different way - and that's ok! Some weeks may be quieter than others - and that's ok!

Each host has freedom to do things their way for their volume. :) The idea is to encourage a variety of perspectives and opportunities for everyone to interact!

I am inspired to do a meta post about something that occurs in the manga! Do I have to wait for the appropriate reread post?

Definitely not! Anything that was welcome in the community before reread is still welcome now. If you have some thing character specific, or wanted to talk about something that happens in a later post, and it doesn't quite fit in with the current reread volume posts that are active at that point in time - please feel free to start your own post to share it.

Or in short. *Qem makes grabby hands at the meta, all the meta.*

What is the policy on spoilers?

It is up to the host on whether they would like to enforce a spoiler policy in the posts that they are hosting for reread. Readers can use whatever method they find appropriate for marking spoilers. You can see information on the different methods and what the community prefers here: http://hikarunogo.dreamwidth.org/89967.html

How can I make it more convinient to participate in conversations via rot13 encryption?

- I did create a rot13 page, for which there is a permanent short cut in the side bar of the chat, as this will make it easy for me to find when I am on the go with my phone, but for my desktop, I have made a discovery which makes the whole experience much more enjoyable and efficient:

- Extensions! Firefox and Chrome have extensions which make it possible to decrypt the text on the page and encrypt your messages before you post via right click.

I am using leetkey for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/leet-key/

But apparently d3coder for chrome is also quite good for rot13 https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/d3coder/gncnbkghencmkfgeepfaonmegemakcol?hl=en

And there is of course, sure to be a grease monkey extension out there.

Do I have to use Viz translations?

Lol, no. You can translate your summary from the special copy you have from Japan or the French translations sitting your your shelves, or if you happened to have the English translation licenced and created for somewhere like, Singapore (also please tell me) that's fine too. I don't think the version you are using should matter to much - and I'd prefer the assumption is that we are working with different versions. This is part of the reason why I outlined the number of chapters that's being considered for each volume to make the reread consistant in that area as everyone is almost certainly likely to be working from different versions. (Furthermore, the Viz translations have been proven to differ depending on their print run.)

How it works!
This is hosted by round-robin, where people sign up for a period of time for a particular volume.

Volumes would be defined by this wikipedia list, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hikaru_no_Go_chapters , for the number of chapters that they cover, as people may be using different translations/publications or have version which combines three volumes into one, or being using the new pretty shiny version that reduces it to 20 volumes.

People have flexibility with how they host the reread for their period of time - the minimum requirement is a summary of what occurs in that volume, and some points/questions for people to respond to in the comments. They can have one post, or multiple posts - during their two week period. (Just we just ask that at least one post / if only one post occurs during the first part of the two week period!)

Some examples of what could occur - we could have one person summarising the arc in the volume, and choosing to focus on questions for the audience, such as character development in that arc. Whereas another person might want to post a summary per chapter, spreadout across their two week period, with screenshots and commentary on that chapters events.

Sign ups are currently restricted - you can't do more than two weeks in a row, and you can't have more than six active claims at a time. If you want to split a claim with some one and share the posting for that week - that's fine too.

This is a post for the battle bingo - it is going up early to allow users to set up tracking.

Please do not comment on this post unless you are Qem doing a character call, or you are posting a fill.

ETA: Comments are now open to everyone! Please feel free to comment on the drabbles, or post additional fills if you are so inclined!

Please direct any questions to the sign up post here.

- Qem will call a character, by creating a new comment, with the name of that character in the subject line. This will occur between Thursday 8th November-12th November.
- Characters will be called at random times, 6:30 am and 11:00 pm, AEST.
- Please post your fills for that character in the relevant thread.
- Please check the comment for how many fills will be accepted for that character call, as it will depend upon the number of participants. ETA: Please feel free to fill any characters you like, if you are so inclined. :)
- You do not need to be signed up in order to start filling out any of the prompts. :D
- You can sign up for a bingo card, in the sign up post here.

Fills:
A fill would be defined as one of the following options, centred around the called character:

Picspam: 5-10 links to fanart by other people/screencaps centered around that character.
Recs: 3 Links + at least three lines on why you are recommending it, to stories/other fan works that centre around that character.
Fanfiction: 81-361 words
FST: 3-5 tracks, no cover art

This is the post where people can sign up to receive a card for the Hikaru no Go Battle Bingo. The battle bingo post will be going up shortly.

What you need to know in regards to cards:
- You may get the same character twice - just do separate fills in order to mark them off.
- You can sign up for a card at any point throughout the game.
- Multiple people may be assigned the same or similar cards - Qem has pre-generated the cards in order to make it easier to copy and paste while she is away from a computer.
- Characters will be called on a separate post, with information about fills to be provided on that post.
- You do not need a card to play, only to win. XD

Prizes:
- A prize will go to the person who has the most amount of fills. And our bingo winner if there is one [first person to black out all 25 squares]. 30 DW points.
- Everyone that can get a line, will get 5 DW points + the joy of winning at bingo. ^_^

So now that I've posted a reminder of things that might be on your should be writing list, now is a good time to talk about things that can serve as a distraction?

Qem's Crazy Battle Bingo

I've been thinking about how to run a bingo that would be fair for participants, even in another timezone to participate. And I was thinking of running this when I am doing a road trip - and consequently would be online at very unpredictable times (around November 8-12 AEST).

The Bingo Part:

- Bingo cards are generated in advance and you can claim your card in advance (or during the game even... XD) - you can share your card or keep it secret. (I would make the sign up post a screened one - DW allows you to reply with a screened comment to people.)
- Qem will have a post where she will leave comments of the characters that have been called.
- Characters will be called at random times, 6:30 am and 11:00 pm, AEST.
- You can fill a square on your card, by filling one of those called characters. Please see what is defined as a fill further down.

The Battle Part:

- If we have less than 10 people sign up, each Character Call, can only be filled 3 times. If we have more than 10 people sign up, each Character Call, can be filled up to 5 times.
- You can fill a Character Call more than once.
- You can fill a Character Call for a Character not on your Bingo Sheet.
... This means you can block other people from making a fill if you wanted to be evil. :D
- Characters can only be called once per day. (Although characters that have been completely filled are more likely to be called again the next day.)
- The game ends on Tuesday, or when someone completes their bingo card.
- A prize will go to the person who has the most amount of fills. And our bingo winner if there is one. 30 DW points.
- Everyone that can get a line, will get 5 DW points + the joy of winning at bingo. ^_^

Apologies for keeping this short - I had a longer message typed up and then lost it. @___________@

1. If you are a big bang author and have not received a summary template from me in your email, please contact me immediately - maybe some things been caught in spam.

2. Sign ups for supplementary creators are still available! I will be emailing the summaries for the first round of selections on November 13th

You can sign up as a supplementary creator here.
For more information please see Rules and FAQ

3. A lot of us have writing projects in November, with Big Bang, Nano, and our own bits and pieces.

It might be cool to organise a writers chat, where we can commiserate, write drabbles to distract us from the things we should be writing, and sprints - sprints are when you select a start time, and then aim to write as much as possible in a short time period 5-15 mins. It can be useful when trying to force yourself out of a stuck point.

When would be some times people are available? Are their any other chat methods you would prefer?

This is a request for feedback on how to organise a manga reread on [community profile] hikarunogo

The key to how I would like to organise it is a round-robin, where people sign up for a period of time for a particular volume.

Volumes would be defined by this wikipedia list, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hikaru_no_Go_chapters , for the number of chapters that they cover, as people may be using different translations/publications or have version which combines three volumes into one.

People could then have flexibility with how they host the reread for their period of time - the minimum requirement is a summary of what occurs in that volume, and some points/questions for people to respond to in the comments.

I've expanded on my thoughts in the comments.

The first couple of weeks should be friendly to spoilers as an introduction but as we progress it should be less of a concern.

Thank you everyone for voting in the poll to determine our finals qualification policy. Judging from the results, it looks like most members are overwhelmingly in favor of having a quick tiebreaker round.

Based on feedback in the comments, we are going to give everyone participating in the tiebreaker round 72 hours instead of our initially proposed 48 hours. I will email the theme for the tiebreaker as soon as I close the polls.

Fanwork submissions for the tiebreaker round must be within the following size limits (although, again, based on feedback in the comments, we've come up with slightly more flexible limits than what was originally proposed):

Fanfiction: 81-361 words
FST: 3-5 tracks, no cover art
Icons: 1-5 icons
AMV: 9-25 seconds
Fanart: 1 illustration, any medium
Podfic: 1:69-3:61 minutes

If your submission does not fall within these limits, it will not be accepted. We recommend that people stick to one type of fanwork for the tiebreaker round. If you would like to submit a fanwork that does not fall into any of the categories above, please contact any of the mods to find out what the appropriate size limits would be.

As this option will require us to push back finals back another week, here is our revised tournament schedule:

Round 5.5

  • tiebreaker for teams tied for second place in the round robin

Preparation period - August 23-26
Fanworks due - August 26, 9 PM PDT
Voting period - August 27-30

Round 6

  • [round robin winner] vs. [tiebreaker winner]

Preparation period - August 30-September 6
Fanworks due - September 6, 9 PM PDT
Voting period - September 7-13

While anything may happen over the next few days, there is quite a high likelihood that we will end up having at least a two-way, if not three-way, tie for the second team spot in the finals.

The mods have discussed several options but have not been able to arrive at a conclusion. We decided that again we'd like to ask the community for its input.

Description of the options we are considering and a poll )

We are right now planning on fine tuning the details, which will come shortly, but we are planning on running a big bang competition with official sign ups starting August 28th. (You of course could always start now, the basic requirement will be that it's not a publicly posted WIP or completed work, before revealled for our challenge)

* A big bang is where people work together to produce a long complete fanwork with supplementary works to enrich the experience!

If [community profile] hikarunogo were to host the organisation of a big bang would you prefer:

o A Dreamwidth account created by the moderators with individual user details added, and the moderator controls the formatting, such as embedding any additional media within the work. e.g. Blindgo (http://answer-key.livejournal.com/), deathmatch (http://uchikomi.dreamwidth.org/)

o A sister Dreamwidth community, where big bang authors and supplementary creators, co-ordinate their post in advance, post a finished copy to the community, which would wait in a queue for the moderators to approve.

o Creating a sub-collection on Ao3, where users can post works to be hidden until the reveal date.

I've detailed my preference in the comment below:
troisroyaumes: Painting of a duck, with the hanzi for "summer" in the top left (Default)

Thank you, everyone, for weighing in on the tiebreaking policy.

After considerable thought and discussion, the mods have collectively decided to stick with the mods' choice method that was outlined in the original rules.

We also agreed that in hindsight, it would have been better to have a strict system of awarding points for draws, rather than relying on mods' subjective votes to decide a tie when the mods themselves are participating in the tournament. We'd like to thank the participants who brought the potential conflict of interest to our attention. However, there were enough objections within the community to the idea of changing rules midway that we felt it was best to keep the standings as they are.

We would like to assure everyone that the mods will do their best to judge as fairly as possible. We recognize that there's no guarantee except our word, but we hope that sticking to our original tiebreaking policy won't spoil the experience for tournament participants.

The modship of Deathmatch will rotate and in all likelihood adopt a different format, so we cannot say whether the rules of future tournaments will change to avoid a mods' choice method of tiebreaking. However, we would like to reassure all participants that we will make sure that the next mods will at least be aware that this issue arose during this tournament so that they can keep it in mind while designing the next Deathmatch.

Results from the third round will be announced shortly!
troisroyaumes: Painting of a duck, with the hanzi for "summer" in the top left (Default)
[personal profile] troisroyaumes
It's been brought to my attention that some participants were unhappy with the method of mod's choice breaking any ties between teams.

Now, prior to resorting to the round robin model to accommodate the odd number of teams, the original rules said that any ties between teams would be resolved by the mods deciding which team would advance. However, due to the switch to the round robin model, this method of tiebreaking may no longer be suitable.

Despite our best attempts to ensure integrity by excluding any mods who may be on the teams in question from being involved in tiebreaking, it's true that all three mods are participating in this deathmatch. The objection raised was that the mods may have a conflict of interest in deciding how to break the tie, even if they were not members of either team, since the results could affect their final standings after the round robin.

After some consideration, here is an alternative method of handling ties that would be fair while also easy for the mods to manage:

- Only teams who win against their opponent will get a point. Teams that draw will get zero points.

- At the end of the round robin, if more than two teams are tied for the highest number of points, the total number of matches won across all four rounds for each team will be summed up to decide the top two teams.

- If more than two teams are tied for total number of matches, then the number of votes for each team across all four rounds will be tallied up to decide the top two teams.

If we go with this alternative method, round 2 results will be retroactively amended.

I'd like to hear from all participants on whether they would like us to switch to the alternative method or stick with the original method, as it will affect everyone's relative standings and it will also be a substantial amendment to the original rules being made halfway through the challenge.

Anonymous comments are allowed, as usual. Please weigh in before round 3 voting closes; I will make the decision based on the majority opinion in the comments by that point.

We've been really excited to see so many people reading, commenting and voting for the first round of Hikago Team Deathmatch!

We noticed that some votes have been coming from roleplaying journals. Now, it's probable that people are just using their roleplaying journals because that's the only account they have on Dreamwidth. So using a roleplaying journal to vote is not a problem in and of itself. But in order to ensure the integrity of the voting, we would really appreciate it if those of you who are voting under a roleplaying account would either comment to the voting post or PM us ([personal profile] troisroyaumes, [personal profile] qem_chibati and [personal profile] hostilecrayon) to let us know that you have not voted under another ID. If we don't hear from you, we may contact you via PM to ask for confirmation on this point.

(ETA: Since my original wording was unclear, I just wanted to add that if you're not voting under a roleplaying account, then we don't need any clarification.)

Since not all the voters are members of this community, we'd also appreciate it if people who might have linked the challenge to their friends could let them know about this policy!
