Hi all,

There has been interest for this kind of statistical analysis, so after a gentle nudge from[personal profile] troisroyaumes, I compiled the following statistics.

three tables with genre/media data )

[personal profile] mmmdracohelped me out when I freaked about the time commitment required to do character stats, so the following stats exist because she took four hours combing through fics!
  • Number of HnG characters that appeared in Deathmatch: 42
  • Number of characters that made gen-only appearances (zero pairings): 20
  • Box office stars, aka characters with the most major (starring) appearances: Shindou Hikaru (34), Touya Akira (24), Ogata Seiji (10)
  • Hollywood A-List (most major appearances, zero minor appearances): Morishita Shigeo (3 major, no minor)
  • Most hardworking characters (highest number of total appearances): Shindou Hikaru (40), Touya Akira (27), Isumi Shinichirou and Ogata Seiji (13 each)
  • Best supporting character, aka characters with the most minor (non-starring) appearances: Waya Yoshitaka and Fujisaki Akari (8 each), Isumi Shinichirou (7)
  • Family friendly stars, aka characters with the most gen appearances: Shindou Hikaru (19), Touya Akira (14), Ogata Seiji, Fujisaki Akari, Fujiwara Sai (9 each)
  • Always Second Best, aka characters with no major appearances: Im Irufhan, Shindou Heihachi, Yang Hai, Ichikawa Harumi, Komiya Eiji
  • Most Promiscuous, aka characters paired with everyone but the kitchen sink: Shindou Hikaru, with 12 partners paired as follows: Touya Akira (13); Ko Yeongha (3); Kaga Tetsuo, Fujisaki Akari, Yashiro Kiyoharu, Fujiwara Sai (2); Mitani Yuuki, Waya Yoshitaka, Ogata Seiji, Tsutsui Kimihiro, Kaneko Masako (1)

I've uploaded the character stats to a Google Docs spreadsheet in case anyone is interested in looking at detailed results--it was too big to do a screencap. Bonus: if you hover over the column (eg hover over "A" for the Characters column) you get a little arrow, and by clicking on the arrow, you can sort the spreadsheet any way you want.

Just one last vid from Tora-des, before everyone gets talking about the reveals. :) She apologies for it being incomplete, she didn't have time to work on it, since she made it to the tie-breaker.

While we wait for the final round, I just wanted to let everyone know that there is now a collection for Hikago Team Deathmatch fanwork submissions up at AO3, called (predictably enough) Hikago Team Deathmatch.

(Those of you who submitted AMVs, FSTs or other multimedia submissions and would like to get the embed code that I used for posting on [personal profile] uchikomi, feel free to contact me.)

We also have collections for most of our other community activities, and any fic that is posted here can also be included in our parent collection.

Fandom Triforce - 1 point
Five-Colored Cloud - 1 point
Ichigaya - 2 points
Kawahagi Middle School - 2 points
The White Suit Society - 4 points

As per the finals qualification policy just announced, that means that Ichigaya and Kawahagi Middle School will be facing off again in a quick tiebreaker round, which will be going up at the end of this weekend.

The White Suit Society, as winner of the round robin, will advance to the finals to face off against the winner of the tiebreaker.

Many thanks to both Fandom Triforce and Five-Colored Cloud for their enthusiastic participation so far. Since both teams are now eliminated from the tournament, members of those teams are welcome to go ahead and reveal their identities, either privately (e.g. by confirming in IM/chat or making a locked post) or publicly (e.g. by making a public post or uploading their work to a public archive). Since there is no official reveal, participants are not obliged to reveal if they don't wish to. Thus, while you are welcome to say what your pseudonym and team was, please avoid giving out your teammates' identities unless they have already revealed themselves.

The other three teams that are still participating in the tournament are still obliged to follow the rule to keep up their pseudonymity to everyone other than their teammates, so please be patient for a little while longer!

Thank you everyone for voting in the poll to determine our finals qualification policy. Judging from the results, it looks like most members are overwhelmingly in favor of having a quick tiebreaker round.

Based on feedback in the comments, we are going to give everyone participating in the tiebreaker round 72 hours instead of our initially proposed 48 hours. I will email the theme for the tiebreaker as soon as I close the polls.

Fanwork submissions for the tiebreaker round must be within the following size limits (although, again, based on feedback in the comments, we've come up with slightly more flexible limits than what was originally proposed):

Fanfiction: 81-361 words
FST: 3-5 tracks, no cover art
Icons: 1-5 icons
AMV: 9-25 seconds
Fanart: 1 illustration, any medium
Podfic: 1:69-3:61 minutes

If your submission does not fall within these limits, it will not be accepted. We recommend that people stick to one type of fanwork for the tiebreaker round. If you would like to submit a fanwork that does not fall into any of the categories above, please contact any of the mods to find out what the appropriate size limits would be.

As this option will require us to push back finals back another week, here is our revised tournament schedule:

Round 5.5

  • tiebreaker for teams tied for second place in the round robin

Preparation period - August 23-26
Fanworks due - August 26, 9 PM PDT
Voting period - August 27-30

Round 6

  • [round robin winner] vs. [tiebreaker winner]

Preparation period - August 30-September 6
Fanworks due - September 6, 9 PM PDT
Voting period - September 7-13

While anything may happen over the next few days, there is quite a high likelihood that we will end up having at least a two-way, if not three-way, tie for the second team spot in the finals.

The mods have discussed several options but have not been able to arrive at a conclusion. We decided that again we'd like to ask the community for its input.

Description of the options we are considering and a poll )

Thank you for your feedback!

So many apologies for once again messing up the polls this week. If you were around to see the first version go up and vote, please vote again in the new polls with links to submissions. In addition to the usual fics, there are multiple AMVs, graphics and even a recipe in this round!

The mods are still discussing what to do in case of a tie for determining the finalists from the round robin results. We'll be sure to update you as soon as we've come to a decision.

So...there was a bit of a mishap where the polls I originally posted had an error in one of the links, upon which I learned that one cannot edit in new polls into a post that already had polls in it previously. Which is why if you've been watching this community closely, you saw that post get deleted and replaced with a new one.

But the upshot is, you can now read/watch and vote for round 4!

Many apologies to those of you who voted in the first post with the polls. Please vote again in the new post to make sure your vote was recorded!

(Also, I think I fixed all the links to the polls in the fanwork posts, but please let me know if you see a broken link.)

Thank you, everyone, for weighing in on the tiebreaking policy.

After considerable thought and discussion, the mods have collectively decided to stick with the mods' choice method that was outlined in the original rules.

We also agreed that in hindsight, it would have been better to have a strict system of awarding points for draws, rather than relying on mods' subjective votes to decide a tie when the mods themselves are participating in the tournament. We'd like to thank the participants who brought the potential conflict of interest to our attention. However, there were enough objections within the community to the idea of changing rules midway that we felt it was best to keep the standings as they are.

We would like to assure everyone that the mods will do their best to judge as fairly as possible. We recognize that there's no guarantee except our word, but we hope that sticking to our original tiebreaking policy won't spoil the experience for tournament participants.

The modship of Deathmatch will rotate and in all likelihood adopt a different format, so we cannot say whether the rules of future tournaments will change to avoid a mods' choice method of tiebreaking. However, we would like to reassure all participants that we will make sure that the next mods will at least be aware that this issue arose during this tournament so that they can keep it in mind while designing the next Deathmatch.

Results from the third round will be announced shortly!

It's been brought to my attention that some participants were unhappy with the method of mod's choice breaking any ties between teams.

Now, prior to resorting to the round robin model to accommodate the odd number of teams, the original rules said that any ties between teams would be resolved by the mods deciding which team would advance. However, due to the switch to the round robin model, this method of tiebreaking may no longer be suitable.

Despite our best attempts to ensure integrity by excluding any mods who may be on the teams in question from being involved in tiebreaking, it's true that all three mods are participating in this deathmatch. The objection raised was that the mods may have a conflict of interest in deciding how to break the tie, even if they were not members of either team, since the results could affect their final standings after the round robin.

After some consideration, here is an alternative method of handling ties that would be fair while also easy for the mods to manage:

- Only teams who win against their opponent will get a point. Teams that draw will get zero points.

- At the end of the round robin, if more than two teams are tied for the highest number of points, the total number of matches won across all four rounds for each team will be summed up to decide the top two teams.

- If more than two teams are tied for total number of matches, then the number of votes for each team across all four rounds will be tallied up to decide the top two teams.

If we go with this alternative method, round 2 results will be retroactively amended.

I'd like to hear from all participants on whether they would like us to switch to the alternative method or stick with the original method, as it will affect everyone's relative standings and it will also be a substantial amendment to the original rules being made halfway through the challenge.

Anonymous comments are allowed, as usual. Please weigh in before round 3 voting closes; I will make the decision based on the majority opinion in the comments by that point.
