Heh, the tradition of the son continuing in his father's footsteps is hardly unique to Japan (e.g. any Western media fandom that has a overprivileged character with daddy issues seems to write loads of fanfic that deals with that expectation, see Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter as the first example that comes to mind). But yes, I think you're right that it's where the fanon comes from. It's a popular trope, and as you say, it's good material for a conflict in fic. But I just really don't think the trope applies to Akira and his father.
