Let's Five! 2013 Edition

It's May 5th, which can mean only one thing... Cinco de Mayo? Pfft! Children's Day? Bah! Happy HikaGo Day, everyone!

Suggested by Hotta Yumi herself and first executed by Aja, HikaGo Day is an opportunity for us to roll around in our feels and remember why we love this series so much.

Five HikaGo events that occurred on or around May 5th:

1. In 1829, Kuwabara Torajirou (Hon'inbou Shuusaku) was born (according to the old lunar calendar that was in use during his lifetime)
2. In 1999, it was about this time that Akari caught Mitani drawing in the correct answer to the tsumego on the Haze go club's recruitment poster
3. In 2000, Hikaru had just been promoted to 16th in insei group 1, barely in time to participate in the Wakajishi tournament
4. In 2001, Sai disappeared and Hikaru began his quest to find him again
5. In 2002, Hikaru and the rest of Team Japan faced Ko Yeongha and the rest of Team Korea in the Hokuto Cup

Kurata has a great appreciation for food, but he can't help but feel a little offended at the implication he can just eat anything. In fact he can think of five things off the top of his head that he won't eat:

1. Anything that was in a competition along the lines of "World's hottest, hot sauce!"
2. Pure fudge - he does have a sweet tooth, but even he needs to draw the line at "56% sugar" undiluted.
3. Root beer. He genuinely doesn't get why his American Friends like the stuff - tastes like medicine.
4. King Fruit - the smell is just too strong.
5. Tinned chicken. He was at first intrigued by the idea, a cheap and efficent method of perserving food, but found that the results left much to be desired.

I can totally see all of these--except root beer! Kurata-sensei, you vulgarian! Root beer is a marvellous and wondrous drink :( Mmmm, sarsaparilla <3

Apparently one of the ingrediants in root beer is often used in medicine in Japan - so it's one of the common in the US foods, a lot of Japanese people really don't get. Or so I've been told. ^.^;;

1. Yashirobot just doesn't have the same kind of ring to it.
2. Ochi doesn't need to choose between further education or furthering his Go career, he has sufficient organisation skills and level of intelligence to cover both easily.
3. Yashiro would have taken the opportunity, his pride be damned; you have to take advantage of any opportunity as it presents itself, least it backfire and you miss out.
4. As Yashiro didn't get to witness the imbecilic nature that required many years of work and forced socialization by Waya, to chip away, he hasn't yet developed enough perspective to truly, deeply, appreciate how important it is to mock Shindou at every opportunity.
5. Despite the fact that Yashiro tries very hard to make and leave an impression on others, Yashiro cares too deeply about what others think of him to really let lose or say what he actually thinks.
