Rare Pair Fest
Another event to keep the Hikago Month momentum!
HOW IT WORKS:
Post anything to do with a rare pairing: Fic, art, podfic, vids, screen caps, inappropriate captions, plot bunnies, your deepest wish for the secret rare pair of your heart, five things, poems, gifs, manifestos, random squee, models out of clay, WHATEVER!
Love on what everyone else has shared.
WHAT CLASSIFIES AS A RARE PAIRING:
So, my deepest hope is to inspire everyone to dig deep into their imagination and their pull out the pairings they've always wanted to write but never had the occasion or motivation to do so before, or to go crazy and create someone else's new favorite rare pair. The sky is the limit!
However, we also wanted to set down standards so that there was no confusion later. So, any pairing that has over 100 fics on AO3 is disqualified.
Which means that... Hikaru/Akira is the only pairing disqualified for this round.
I know, I know, but the second most used pairings in the fandom are Ko Yeong-ha/Yashiro and Isumi/Waya, tied at 44 fics each (to Hikaru/Akira's 399). Since no one else comes close, it's unfair to shut this fest out to otherwise under represented pairing, despite how we think of them. So, take this as inspiration to produce more content for your favorite ship and help grow their visibility on AO3!

Okay, well, everyone is the winner here because there will (hopefully) be tons of lovely things to read and look at and enjoy.
HOWEVER! To make it a little interesting, let's see which rare pairing is the most improved by June 1st.
The Fest can go on as long as people like, but we can have multiple rounds of awards after this if we're still going strong.
Feel free to take this opportunity to archive old fic to AO3, post your Hikago Day drabbles, and bully (nicely) others to do the same, as well as create new content. It's free range! Just link back to this post so we can find it!

1. KANEKO/MITANI FOREVER. I'm never not going to say this.
2. Kaga/Tsutsui. Same thing. Never not going to be there.
3. I'm actually really digging the recent Yashiro/Hikaru thing right now.
4. Waya/Hikaru. Not something I actively ship, but I think it's interesting. Also it's totally part of my headcanon that they fooled around at some point.
5. Ogata/Isumi. Again, not a surprise to most people, but I just love it even though there's basically no canon support for it. XD
Bonus: I love love love Ashiwara/Saeki, but I think Saeki/Isumi could be interesting too. Also Ogata/Ashiwara is an interesting dynamic.

Oooooh man. What is Ogata and Isumi are dating, and Isumi starts to get all worried that Ogata is actually in love with Kuwabara and he'll never measure up. And when he finally says something to Ogata, Ogata is all ".....Swear that you'll never caddie for that man." because he was concerned Kuwabara has been trying to take Isumi from him just for the lolz.
Actual facts: Kuwabara has been intentionally messing with both of them. Obviously.

Not terribly secret either. XD
1. Ogata/Kuwabara, their connection is deep and true, drawn to each other across a chasm of time.
2. Waya/Yang Hai - friendly and sociable, they hit it off on the internet and then in real life.
3. Le Ping/Isumi - Le Ping is so bright and friendly - and despite his similarities quite different to most people Isumi's met.
4. Waya/Hikaru - Waya just can't help himself with looking after this guy.
5. I too, am digging the Yashiro/Hikaru thing right now.
Bonus: Nase/Akari - cute and fluffy, they make their own way through.

1. Hikaru/Touya Kouyou, because Hikaru's thing for older dudes and his sincere respect for Touya-sensei would make this the headiest thing. I am a huge sucker for intense go in fic, and you could write so many different kinds of games and leave so many things unsaid based on the flow of the games and they would just CONNECT on this unimaginable level above anyone else.
2. Hikaru/Touya Akiko, because Touya's mom is a stone-cold fox and so very darling and you just know she'd be charmed by him and the effect he's had on her lonely son. Hikaru would feel SO INCREDIBLY GUILTY about it too and it'd be all he could think about whenever he looked at Akira.
Unnumbered because I totally get this a freebie based on my previous choices, Hikaru/Touya Kouyou/Touya Akiko, because in my head the Touyas have this wonderful marriage of true love and understanding and of course it would be fun to share a pretty young thing like him between the two of them (and their friends *coughcough* (oh man I'm like 6k into this fic and I feel like I'm going to hell just for writing it)).
3. Hikaru/Yashiro, because Yashiro didn't insei with him and doesn't know that Hikaru used to be some teensy babyface scrublet who barely made it into the Wakajishi tournament; Yashiro meets Hikaru when Hikaru's starting to grow up and lean and is the Strongest Shodan who plays with an intensity and an inventiveness that dazzles everyone, so of course he's gonna think Hikaru's the bees' knees. Long distance anything sucks, and that's almost enough to kill things, but then the next time they get to see each other it's so intoxicatingly wonderful that he knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's worth every moment.
4. Hikaru/Waya, because as much as Waya never thought to or wanted to get involved with Shindou like that, it just happened. I'm with Ver on them fooling around being BASICALLY CANON COME ON YOU TOTALLY KNOW IT, and neither of them really meant to get into a relationship but whoa it's been like six months since they started fooling around and if that means something then oh shit Waya's so boned.
HOW THE HELL AM I AT FIVE ALREADY SHIIIIIIIIIIT okay well I could say Mitani or Togari or Suyeong or Ichikawa or Tsubaki but aaaaaaaaaack okay I guess I'll go with:

Hikaru/Ogata, because Ogata is a desperate man with no sense of appropriate boundaries as we have already seen, and I think he's an intensely lonely person (too young to be comrades with Zama or Nogi and Touya Meijin and Kuwabara are out of the question, too old to be comrades with Saeki or Ashiwara and the New Wave is out of the question) so he's just a disaster waiting to happen (hooking up with an underage kid is a disaster IMHO; I am judgemental). For Hikaru, I think the appeal could come from many different directions, but I think most of all he'd really respect and find attractive Ogata's intensity. Hikaru'd start out all rabbity and nervous around Ogata since holy crow the nailing to walls and interrogation about Sai thing, but Ogata is a really, really good and inventive go player and he's pretty ridiculously charming so I don't think Hikaru'd see Ogata coming until he was already caught in the undertow.
Also, it would drive Touya positively BATSHIT INSANE, and I would read a million times about the power dynamics involved with all three of them in every direction when Hikaru and Ogata are hooking up/in a "relationship"/in a no-shit holy-crap relationship.
