Note: I'll be using the official Viz Media adaptation as my English language accompaniment, as while it's not my favourite adaptation, I'm not particularly fond of the scanlations either. I'll try not to harp on every little thing in their translation I disagree with, but I'll point out the most disappointing decisions/egregious mistakes as I see them.

Volume Summary
Kaga challenges Hikaru to a game of go, and after being impressed by his skills (in actuality Sai's skills), pressgangs him into attending the winter go tournament at Kaiou Middle School alongside Kaga and Tsutsui, despite not actually being a student of Haze Middle School.
At the tournament Hikaru is a disappointment when he plays for himself but when he allows Sai to take over he impresses everyone including Touya Akira, who had been at the school for an admissions interview. Despite that, Sai can see inside of Hikaru the germination of his talent.
Hikaru begins his first year at Haze Middle School and joins Tsutsui's go club. Touya tracks him down and confesses that he's been preoccupied with thoughts of Hikaru's go and has been waiting for Hikaru to return to play him. Hikaru tells him that he won't play Touya, and that he intends to participate in the summer go tournament.
Touya decides to join his school's go club in order to meet Hikaru in the upcoming tournament. The other students find him a disruptive presence, and the naïve first year Okumura comes up with a half-baked scheme to prove that Touya isn't invincible after all. When that fails miserably, two older students take Okumura under their wing and together the three of them are determined to find a way to knock Touya down a peg or two.
