I'm Not Going to Play You
This chapter originally appeared in the 16th issue of Weekly Shounen Jump in 1999.
Material from this chapter was adapted into anime episode 7 (お前とは打たない, "I'm Not Going to Play You").
This chapter takes place in April of 1999.
Chapter Summary
Hikaru begins his spring at Haze Middle School. Students are discussing which clubs to join, and mention the club posters on the bulletin board.
Two members of the basketball club see the go club poster taking up prime real estate and tear it down.
Hikaru comes tearing out of the boys' washroom and berates them, brandishing the toilet mop. Akari manages to still Hikaru, and Tsutsui comes by to see what all the fuss is about. Hikaru complains, and the basketball club members say that no one's going to go to the go club.
Kaga shows up, comments that the basketball team is pretty strong, ntoes that the go club is in big trouble, but that the shogi club is doing just great. He says that Hikaru's always welcome to join the shogi club.
Akari and Hikaru clean up the mess Hikaru made while Tsutsui repairs the poster. Tsutsui notes that Tamako-sensei gave the club a goban and a set of stones she wasn't using, and invited them to use the science room.
Hikaru and Tsutsui decide to work hard on recruiting more members to become an officially recognized club. Akari declares she will too, and Hikaru gives her a hard time about it.
Outside the front gate, Akira is dropped off by Ichikawa. She offers to wait for him, but he says he'll take the bus instead.
Akira draws attention from the other students due to his Kaiou uniform. He asks around to see if anyone knows where Shindou Hikaru or the go club are. He doesn't get any help; no one knows about Shindou Hikaru or anything about a go club, though some members of the baseball club do mention the shogi club. It's not until Akira runs into Tamako-sensei in the parking lot that he gets the information he needs, though he's horrified to discover that they're located in the science room instead of a club room.
Tsutsui and Hikaru reminisce about the tournament, and feel optimistic about the future. Tsutsui tells Akari about Hikaru's ability to play extraordinarily well under pressure (when Sai plays through him), and she laughs at his current poor play. Incensed, Hikaru yells at her, drawing Akira's attention as he approaches the outside window to the science room.
Akira calls out to Hikaru, and asks him why a person like him is in his school's go club. He asks if Hikaru will return to the go salon, says that he himself is usually always there, and that no matter who he plays, he's consumed with thoughts of Hikaru and how Hikaru would play in response to Akira's moves. Akira's improved his devotion to his studies in order not to play embarrassing moves the next time they meet. He says he came to tell Hikaru that he's waiting for him.
Tsutsui's a little taken aback, since he quite reasonably assumes that he's overestimating Hikaru.
Hikaru says he won't play Akira, and that instead he's going to work hard with Tsutsui and the go club and play in the next tournament.
Akira protests, but Hikaru shuts the window and closes the curtain on him. Tsutsui approaches him, Sai is concerned, and Hikaru is resolved that he's going to make Akira wait until Hikaru can catch up to him.
Akira wonders why Hikaru won't play him. He knows that Hikaru doesn't fear him, because he's the one afraid of Hikaru. He remembers Hikaru's intention to play in the tournament, and resolves that he will as well.
The Kaiou go club is filled with rumours that Touya Akira will be joining the go club. People are upset and concerned because Akira will be a disruptive influence as a brand-new first year who will surely knock the third-year club president Kishimoto aside.

Commentary
ARGH VIZ STOP DROPPING INFORMATION; they didn't include the part where it said to see Tsutsui of class 3-2 :( So now we know what class Tsutsui's in! Yay!

I cannot tell you how hard I need the AU where Kaga successfully wiles Hikaru into the shogi club. Hikaru can be in the go club too, but I would LOVE to see this done on an extended basis.

Oh man, I've read the Viz adaptation before but not very closely, and boy howdy are there some gems in here. This is a really embarrassing mistake; Tsutsui is referring to タマ子 (Tamako)-sensei, not クマ子 (Kumako)-sensei. Whoops.
Oh Ichikawa-san, how friendly, how helpful! Her look when he shuts the door on her and turns down her offer is priceless <3
Poor Akira, thinking he won't just be in and out. I'm sorry you didn't get to play a game, bb, but it's really for the best, I promise.
Oh man, Akira's really pretty already, isn't he? And he does speak quite delightfully here <3 Akira might not have or develop game, but he is really quite charming, so he'll do fine in life and in love.
Aww, Viz had him trail off here instead of exclaim it (busting out a "!?" and all!). Still, I love his steadily-growing horror at the idea that not only is Shindou Hikaru the magnificent go genius not continuously fêted in the halls by throngs of adoring fans, this unappreciative school doesn't even have a proper club room in which to house him!
GOD DAMN IT HIKARU DON'T HIT PEOPLE
Also, I totally forgot that the early Haze girls' uniforms looked so different from the uniforms later in the series.

This is kind of a weird emphasis. The original text emphasizes the "I" part quite explicitly with kenten, making it "I'll make him wait until I catch up to him" which makes sense because Hikaru wants to catch up to Akira under his own power, not Sai's. Emphasizing "him" is redundant and nonsensical if "him" is Akira because obviously you intend to catch up with the person you're catching up with, and is completely reconfiguring the focus of his thoughts if it's meant to refer to Sai since while yeah this involves Sai, Hikaru's concern here is catching up to Akira, not Sai. So I got nothin'. Thoughts?

i think what they were going for here is that right now, akira is chasing hikaru. but, in so doing, he's actually chasing Sai. so, hikaru wants to turn this situation around, and chase him, emphasis on akira because now hikaru is going to be the one chasing. that's how i read it, anyway, and having no knowledge of the japanese...
i think it basically works out the same? it's just in the japanese, the emphasis on hikaru, not sai, being the one to play him is made by saying I will chase him, and in this adaptation, the emphasis is made by saying that hikaru will be the one chasing.

I was so distressed at the idea of Sai usurping this moment that I couldn't really think about it any other way, but this makes about a thousand times more sense and everything clicks into place for me now. Oh man, speaking of Kaiou's ridiculously nice layout and groundskeeping, this sculpture just makes me snicker every time with how over the top it is.
Yeah, this is how I'm reading the manga this time round. I only just started and finished this project in time for reread, so I'm looking forward to finally noticing a bunch of art edits I never even thought to look for before (check out the shirts Hikaru wears in Games 39 and 40!) in addition to Dumb Translation Mistakes like misreading a character or dropping markers on numbers like "half" or "under" T.T

CAN'T HAVE OUR CHARACTERS WEARING SHIRTS WITH POTENTIALLY CHRISTIAN OR TRADEMARKED SYMBOLS ON THEM!!! hahaha i liked the spider-man-ish shirt. now i kinda wish i had the same system set up anyway even tho i wouldn't be able to red the japanese!!! DEFINITELY LMK IF THERE ARE ANY GLARING ART EDITS IN VOL 3 TOO haha. maybe i will try to like, read it in my hand while having the raws open on my computer screen or something to see if i can notice art edits. XD XD
