This week’s character spotlight is Tsutsui Kimihiro! In addition to discussing episodes 5 and 6, let’s celebrate Tsutsui!

Tsutsui’s official title is “The Founder.”
In episodes 5 and 6, we see Tsutsui with his nose in a Tsumego book during his matches. And yet, we know from his incredible comeback that he is a strong player, especially in Yose. Do you agree with Kaga that Tsutsui’s Tsumego book is holding him back?
Episode 5 – Prediction of an Awakening
Sai tries to come back from losing so many stones, but he loses by half a moku. Akari finally meets up with Hikaru, but he’s too concerned about losing to talk to her. Kaga and Tsutsui are amazed at such a spectacular comeback, and Kaga decides they will enter the school tournament with Hikaru. Hikaru arrives early and tells Sai that he wants to play for himself. He sees someone he knows and realizes he’ll have to keep a low profile so he doesn’t get discovered. He watches a game that goes about halfway when the stones get messed up. Hikaru pulls the stones off the board and completely replays the game up to the point they were at, angering and amazing the actual players of the game. We learn that this is a higher level skill that Hikaru shouldn’t have. Kaga taunts his opponent, but wins, and Hikaru loses. Kaga is shocked by the state of Hikaru’s game after having played Sai. Hikaru compares the board to the universe with him as the god. Everything rests on Tsutsui’s shoulders to advance to the next round.
Episode 6 – The Beautiful Match
Touya just so happens to be touring his future school on the same day as the tournament. The principle asks him to join the Go club, but Touya knows it’s not the place for him, though the principle thinks it would be good if there was someone to look up to. Touya replies that he’s not as strong as the principle thinks. Tsutsui wins his match and Haze advances. Kaga wins in the second match, as well. Kaga sees Tsutsui will lose, so to get Hikaru to play seriously, he tells him Haze must win the tournament or not only will Haze not get to have a club, but the Shougi club will take it out on Tsutsui for having Kaga in the tournament and still losing. Hikaru sees the gap between him and his opponent, and Sai starts to tease him, but Hikaru is so upset that he doesn’t have the strength that he cries, and Sai is sympathetic to his feelings and wins the second match. Then they face Kaio. We’re treated to a flashback of Touya talking with Ogata about Hikaru playing his father. When the principle finally pulls him out of his memory, Touya spots Hikaru at the tournament. During the game, Sai begins to help Hikaru learn the meaning behind his moves and officially becomes his Go teacher, saying Hikaru has awakened. Kaga loses his match, and when he looks to Hikaru, he sees Touya staring intently at the board. Tsutsui is about to resign when his opponent makes a mistake, giving Tsutsui the win. Kaga, Touya and Tsutsui all stare in shock and awe at Hikaru’s game. His opponent resigns and Yun-Sensei comforts him. Hikaru finally looks up and sees Touya. Touya tells him that it was a beautiful match, but he’s angry that he wasn’t the one playing him and he resolves to no longer run from Hikaru, going so far as to say that he will never reach the Hand of God if he doesn’t surpass him. As Haze is about to be declared the winner of the tournament, Hikaru is found out, and the win defaults to Kaio. Sai asks Hikaru if he felt anything from their last match, and Hikaru says yes and thinks about how Touya is chasing after Sai, and though he’s so far behind, he will take his first step.
Possible Discussion Questions
Touya’s education isn’t discussed much in Hikaru no Go. However, we do know that Kaio is incredibly prestigious and difficult to get into thanks to Hikaru’s comment when he arrives at the tournament. We are also told that Touya Kouyou also went to Kaio when he was a child. Usually, fandom portrays Touya as doing nothing but playing Go and doing Go-related activities, but to be able to get into Kaio, he must study hard and possibly be quite smart. What do you think of studious Touya? Do you think he has a favorite subject? A least favorite? What do you think Touya thinks of school? Are there other things Touya is interested in that we just don’t see in the manga?
Sai says that Hikaru has ‘awakened’. What do you think he means by this? Additionally, what do you think of Hikaru comparing the Go board to the universe?
Though Kaga takes note of Touya, the two don’t appear to have any interaction whatsoever, even though they were in the same Go class when they were little. Touya, if fact, never even acknowledges his existence. Is it possible Touya has forgotten him? Is it just his extreme focus on Hikaru, or do you think he may be feeling awkward or uncertain, and so does nothing? Since there is no discussion of it whatsoever in the anime or manga that I know of, I think it would be nice to explore this a little. Maybe Kaga’s intense hate (which really boils down to hurt) keeps Touya at a distance, or maybe he is just so selfishly focused on Hikaru that he doesn’t even notice him. What do you guys think? (If you feel the urge to drabble this, I highly encourage it! :D)
Touya’s reaction to Shindou’s game really stands out – he tells him it was a beautiful game but that he’s angry Hikaru wasn’t playing him (AND THEN HE CALLS HIM SHINDOU-KUN ALSKDJGHDLKFGDHDSGH FORGOT ABOUT THAT) and tells him he realizes that he will never reach the Hand of God unless he surpasses Hikaru, so he’s resolved to not run from Hikaru anymore. (When did he run from Hikaru? I only remember 347653894756 scenes of him running TO Hikaru. XDDD) This little speech speaks volumes about what Touya thinks of Hikaru (or Sai, without knowing it), and for someone you’ve only met twice, this is an incredibly strong statement to make. But even with as little as we know about Touya at this point in the rewatch, we know that this is not a declaration he makes lightly. What do you think of this declaration and do you think this moment shapes what’s to come?
(Sorry for the outbursts in that last question – I try so hard to keep the posts semi-professional and pairing/character neutral, but… SHINDOU-KUN? *Dies of adorableness*)
Alright guys, you know the drill. ROT13 for spoilers, feel free to take the topics and run with them, introduce your own topics, fic, give recs, meta, squee, whatever. As long as it’s Hikago related!
As for the chat, It was FANTASTIC, and if you missed it, never fear, we’ll be doing it again next week on Saturday, March 3rd at 6PM PST. What time is that in the rest of the world? We’ll be doing episodes 7 and 8, and you’re welcome to show up early or stay late – Aja has given us permission to use it whenever we need to. That means if some of you are only available at times that I can’t be here to run the live chat, you can make use of the room to have your own chats at whatever time you’d like! You are also welcome to post announcements about unofficial chats you plan to have with the rewatch tag. (Please only post once per chat – I know during BG sometimes people go crazy and post six times for the same chat – let’s not bury the discussion posts, shall we? XD) If for some reason you expect there to be more than 12 people there, or if you can’t get into an official chat because the chat is full, you have to let me know. Aja has offered to adjust it if we end up with more than twelve people – but I’ll have to ask her, so make sure to contact me.
If you have any questions/comments/suggestions/etc, please do let me know!
Now, let’s discuss!
Ack, sorry about the delete, I don't know why it posted the comment, I wasn't ready! D:
Date: 2012-02-26 04:47 am (UTC)Discussion Questions:
1. I think Akira is quite studious- he would have to be, really. A place like Kaio isn't going to let you in just because your father went there. The principal even says something to the effect of, "if you get in." IF. As in, not a guarantee. So obviously, his grades would have to come into account. I'm sure he has a favorite and least favorite subject, like any student. It kind of amuses me to think that as far as that goes, he's the exact opposite of Hikaru- that history is his favorite and gym is his least favorite. That being said, I would think that he likes school... at least I hope he likes school, because he DOES continue on with high school after he could stop, and no one would blame him with his busy schedule, you know? I really don't think that Akira has a whole lot of hobbies outside of the game. He kind of obviously lives and breathes Go. However, he probably enjoys reading, I would think.
2. I think that Sai means that Hikaru's real interest, and real potential, has now awakened. Before he was just doing what Sai told him to do, but now Hikaru's mind has opened to the experience and he can learn and grow as a player in his own right. :D As far as the "making the universe" thing... as much as it's corny and kind of ridiculous, I always really liked that scene. It's probably in my top five favorite stand alone scenes in the series.
3. Well, in all fairness, Akira was probably what, around five or so when he was in that class? It's TOTALLY possible that he has forgotten Kaga. Most people do not remember a whole lot from that age. I don't think that he would've felt too awkward to say anything to Kaga had he recognized him- Akira is polite to a fault with everyone except Hikaru, so he probably would've felt compelled to say SOMETHING. Some sort of greeting, anyway. Of course, the other option is a definite possibility too, that he just doesn't really even notice Kaga because Hikaru is in the room, and of course Hikaru is ALL IMPORTANT.
4. I'd forgotten about the Shindou-kun too, to be honest. XD When Akira says he's not going to run from Hikaru anymore, I think he means more in his own mind. It's more of a statement that he's not going to be afraid of him anymore, and he's kind of... announcing his intention to chase after Hikaru/Sai. If that makes any sense. And of course it shapes what's to come. It's what the entire freaking series is BASED on, after all. Come on now. :P
Play-by-play reactions (not too many this time, heh.)
-Oh wow, Hikaru and that Haze uniform. It's so ridiculously huge on him. How did no one call him on the fact that his uniform doesn't fit? He CLEARLY has someone else's. XD
-....Hikaru doesn't even look like he's watching this game. He's just standing there with a REALLY spaced out look on his face. WTF. Clearly he's paying attention because he recreates the entire thing, but he looks totally zoned out. O_o
-"Tsutsui's our only hope." ....kinda sad how neither of them look particularly hopeful at this. Hikaru doesn't even know how Tsutsui plays, aside from what Kaga has said. XD
-I never really understood why the whole lack of forgiveness thing is such a big deal in Japanese culture. Honestly, who CARES if someone you barely know will never forgive you for something? Clearly I'm missing something here.
-I think the first time I watched this, I thought the stunt that Kaga pulled on Hikaru was really mean. I still think it is a little, but I can also see why he did it. Kaga wanted to win, plain and simple, and Hikaru at this point, is so bafflingly inconsistent that he felt the need to guilt him into playing well. XD
Aaaand finally, on Tsutsui (who is adorable love): The book is clearly a security blanket of sorts. I kind of feel like Kaga is out of line in throwing the book away- if it makes Tsutsui feel better, and helps him be more confident, let him have the freaking book. You know? Especially during a competition. Wean him off of it during regular club practices or something, jeez.

Date: 2012-02-26 05:19 am (UTC)Yeah that look didn't look like he was concentrating, it looked like he was, as you said, spacing out. It was a bit weird to see him just standing there like a robot. Now that I think of it, I don't think we get any further looks like that?

Kawahagi (川萩): leatherfish
Haze (葉瀬): goby
Sawara (佐和良): Spanish mackerel
Ayu (阿由): sweetfish
Iwana (岩名): char

Hamachi (浜地): yellowtail

V.v.v important yaoi thoughts.....
Date: 2012-02-26 06:16 am (UTC)Which I don't think I've explicitly seen! (although some stories who knows what their getting up to - I don't generally think about pairings via that type of dynamic anyway.)
Then I remembered my interpretation of Kaga liking to be the center of attention and how that's a yaoi trope the seme showers attention on the uke (some going so far as to cut the seme out of the picture to focus on the uke.)
And now I can't unsee it.
Thoughts....?
(this is of course completely post series... :3)
Re: V.v.v important yaoi thoughts.....
Date: 2012-02-26 07:28 am (UTC)I don't recall ever seeing a seme Tsutsui either. But then, Kaga/Tsutsui is not =terribly= common to begin with. Might be interesting to see. :D
Re: V.v.v important yaoi thoughts.....
Date: 2012-02-26 08:01 am (UTC)See I can see Kaga starting off wanting to be the top, and Tsutsui is /very/ agreeable, the way he tends to be, but then Kaga finds Tsutsui is just, so attentative and detailed that Kaga let's go and relaxes, and then Tsutsui pulls off this devious yose and Kaga's more - "let's do that again"
:D :D :D

Hikaru's awakening
Date: 2012-02-26 07:07 am (UTC)I think it means that Hikaru now has genuine interest and drive to do well in the game.
>Additionally, what do you think of Hikaru comparing the Go board to the universe?
That he understands the true glory of math and possibilities! Also he's engaging in the game - he's learning how things apply - not just as a mimic, but this is the start of him developing his own distinct style from Sai - which I think as discussed in the dragon vs tiger post last month, is sort of like an opposite school of thought.
Like if Sai is the powerful tiger, with a vast array of experience and techiniques, then Hikaru is the dragon who's just learning the flow of the game and will eventually learn how to trip the centre balance of the game completely.
Forgot!
Date: 2012-03-03 01:19 am (UTC)Kaga: When I first watched HnG I was a little surprised at Kagas sudden wish to play this tournament after showing such an extreme aversion to Go in the previous ep. It actually made the character look flaky at best, down right unbelievable at worst.
Tsutsui: I like Tsutsui. But I was disappointed at the lack of a proper introduction, like Kaga received. But, as that scene where he wins his game against Kaio, only to look over to Hikaru and see that Hikaru has completely stolen the spotligh, shows; this story is not about Tsutsui, no matter how much we like him.
Sai taking over from Hikaru in mid-game: This is actually something that I think is the iffiest thing in the entire manga/anime. How is that not cheating? Hikaru, by starting the game playing at his own (quite low) level, lures his opponent into a false sense of what he is up against. Than halfway through Sai takes over, and the opponent is obliterated.
Okay that sounded like I utterly hated the eps. But that is not so; I did love the by-play of the characters and I liked the way each Go player, on both sides and Sai, were quite different from each other. As were the coaches of the teams.
And I liked how Hikaru was starting to look at Go. The recreation of that game - he must have photographic kind of memory, 'cause that is not normal! - was awesome. As was the Go = universe bit.
Touya: I felt very sorry for him; he thinks he's been annihilated by a kid his own age, who doesn't even try to play Go seriously. While all this time he's been bested by a genius player who has had 20 years of Go playing experience in his first life and another 30 in his ghostly life in the Edo period. That 50 years of experience; no wonder Touya got creamed! And if he thinks all that came out of 11 year old Hikaru; no wonder he feels insignificant and is loosing his confidence. And that is the consequence of perpetrating a cheat like Hikaru and Sai are doing.
But Touya is a fighter; he'll not give up that easily.

Date: 2012-03-06 08:24 pm (UTC)They were good eps; the scene with Touya, yes, that is such an excellent scene. :D :D
(also I'm too tired to even try to have any intelligent thoughts on discussion questions this time around, haha. oooooooops.)
