* Sai and Hikaru walking along the street talking about sending people to the moon and why umbrellas are still umbrellas. It’s such a beautiful scene on many levels, from the actual gorgeous depiction of the street and the cityscape to the easy, relaxed affection between Sai and Hikaru and to the philosophical note: humans are still humans in a changing world, as demonstrated by Sai and Hikaru, who are so different – different mindsets, personalities, generations, eras, worlds… differences bridged by the moon, the umbrellas and of course go. (And I apologise for that horrible sentence.)

* Hikaru’s epiphany in the book room at the Institute, when he finally acknowledges the fact that Sai is gone (which he has known all along) and realises both Sai’s genius and a good many things about himself, and about love and respect. This is one of the key scenes of the series; so important to Hikaru's development not only as a go player but as a person.

* The game between Hikaru and Isumi at the Shindou house, when Hikaru finds Sai in his game – so powerful and moving.

* Drunk Ogata! I’m seriously in love with Ogata anyway and his good-natured, honest, drunken insistence only makes me love him more. The scene is hilarious and heartbreakingly sad at the same time, sad both for the knowledge that Sai will soon be gone and because the whole scene somehow underlines Ogata's loneliness.

* When Sai disappears. It's so beautifully done! Hikaru yawning desperately and falling asleep, Sai's half-finished sentence, the emptiness after Sai is gone – just silence and the koi flags flapping in the wind. It’s so true to real life – you don’t get to say goodbye, you don't get to finish things properly, and dramatic and life-changing things happen when you turn your back for a moment (or nod off).

I could easily list another five favourite scenes, but here is one extra little thing – it doesn't count anyway because it’s not actually a scene! It’s only a brief, hilarious moment when Hikaru realises he needs to become an insei to catch up to Touya, and imagines the insei as a big room full of Kishimoto clones. It makes me laugh every time!

Wallet (a horrible yellow nylon thing).
Rubber duck. (Yes, of course he has one - not that he'd ever tell anyone. Touya will find it, though, eventually.)

I love those scenes too *__* There are so many wonderful moments in HnG ^__^ Especially interaction between Sai and Hikaru is just so cute.

Lessee

1) Touya Kouyou-Sai. That's about the best match in the entire series.

2) Ogata-Sai. It's such a sad match. I wish there was a chance for them to play properly, not with one hiding and one drunk.

3) Kishimoto-Hikaru. What? No strange looks, please. This is clearly the match that Hikaru's story swings on.

4) The Mitani-Hikaru match as one of the three boards. That was quite moving in how easily Hikaru moved past him.

5) The Ogata-Kuwabara match where Kuwabara is playing mind games and poor Ogata starts looking like he's Akira's age.

Ogata... is my favourite character for entirely non-aesthetic reasons. Honest.

My personal canon? That would be a lot of possible-to-happen games...

1. their first official match after accident in which Akira lost his sight (Hikaru won)
2. Young Lions tournament when Shindou make it to the finals and lost to Akira because he didn't use komi rule
3. firs round of Mejin Tournament - canon, but good as well ^^
4. dan-series-game that decided that Hikaru told Akira about Sai
5. game during pro exams ^^

Kishimoto-Hikaru Why strange looks? Kishimoto is really cute XD

You know, that's why I like Kuwabara - no matter who you are you are somehow scared of him... unless you are Hikaru, I can't remember if he ever reacted that way :)
