Type of fanwork: Fic
Name: Something to do with Ghosts? Maybe?
Characters/Pairings: Hikaru, Akira, Sai, either gen or Hikaru/Akira
Plot: During a game with Hikaru, Akira slowly begins to be able to see Sai.
Any other information: Um. I read this years ago. As in years ago, as in possibly close to a decade ago. It was on a random personal site. It had a sequel. It probably no longer exists, but it can't hurt to try, right? If I could at least find a dead link, I could see if it was on the Wayback Machine! I swear this thing exists and that I read it!

Oh god, I'm old.

...honestly, I'd take anything where Akira can actually see Sai (while Sai is still a ghost and haunting Hikaru).

Okay, I'm pretty sure I found what you're looking for (I stumbled across this very recently, actually, in my quest to read All The Hika/Aki Hikago, because I'm insane). There are two fics, actually: Ghost, and then the sequel That Which Watches From the Shadows, which has the scene that you describe toward the end.

Author is Michelle Thatcher, whose personal site indeed appears to be down, but her profile on Fanfiction.net is still up.
