chagrined: Hikaru no Go: Sai telling Touya to come at him, bro. (COME AT ME BRO)
[personal profile] chagrined posting in [community profile] hikarunogo
Okay so I am resolving myself to there being no way my reread posts will be as gr8 as very's epic volume 2 posts. XD AND THAT'S OK.

Spoiler policy for my posts: Not gonna make a separate post for spoilers, just ROT13 them if you talk about future volumes. I use this Firefox add-on to convert to/from ROT13 easily. ETA: Or you can use html to make both the text and background black if you want! That works too. :)

VOLUME 3

(larger)

I have the Viz edition, so that's what I'll primarily be working from! I love the cover on this one. Touya looks very cool the way he is stylized here.

Here's the Japanese tankoubon cover for comparison:

(larger)

The back cover of the Viz edition provides me with a horrible helpful summary of the volume so WOW LOOK AT THAT I DON'T EVEN NEED TO WRITE ONE MYSELF. :'D

"PRELIMINARY SCRIMMAGE: Akira is beginning a new school year at Kaio Middle School. With his daunting reputation as the Toya Meijin's son, Akira finds he must prove himself to more than a few mean and jealous classmates. And with the help of upperclassman Yrui Hidaka, Akira finds the confidence to persevere in his hunt to beat HIkaru. Meanwhile, Hikaru is having a hard enough time just trying to find a third teammate to play in the Haze Middle School Go Club. A possible teammate arrives in the form of Yuki Mitani — but will he join their club or continue to swindle old timers for their pocket change?"

THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS AND MORE will be revealed in my posts as you read or re-read. :O

(Or, tl;dr, Krim version: LOTS OF SHOTAS IN ABUSIVE GO SITUATIONS)

Ahem. My edition is the first English Viz printing from January 2005, translated into English by Andy Nakatani with redraws/lettering by Adam Symons.

First on the inside cover we have this SUPER CUTE LITTLE OMAKE (using the Japanese one b/c it's in color):

Text: "It's possible to play Go in pairs. Each pair of the team takes alternate turns and you aren't allowed to discuss or tell each other where to move. The interesting part of this is how a strong payer will overcome his weaker teammate's moves. - Hotta Yumi"
Sai: Oh! She's playing there?!
Touya: If I were playing next, I would...
Hikaru: Hmm...

WOW PAIED GO WOW. I DON'T REMEMBER THIS FROM WHEN I READ THE MANGA BEFORE. HOW AMAZING!!! Having people play in pairs and alternating moves but not being allowed to discuss them. WHY AREN'T THERE EIGHT HUNDRED MORE FICS WRITTEN USING THIS IDEA???

Characters who rate character intros this time: Hikaru, Akira, Sai, Touya Meijin, Akari, and Tsutsui. HEY CONGRATS TSUTSUI, YOU GOT TO BE A MAIN CHARACTER THIS TIME INSTEAD OF GETTING DISPLACED BY KAGA AGAIN! Haha.

From the story thus far summary: Wow Viz, who the heck actually uses the word "cutup"? NOT YOUR AUDIENCE OF PRETEENS AND YOUNG TEENAGERS, I CAN TELL YOU THAT! More awkward translations: Kaiou is "favored to win top honors." Uhhhh. Why don't you say they're favored to WIN. I'm shaking my head at you, Viz.

But wait, there's more: "Ths club being in its infancy," really? Also, this blurb is making me think about how I want another AU where Haze tries to pull a fast one at the tournament a second time, this time by having Akari crossdress as a boy or something. [Ed: V GBGNYYL SBETBG GUVF VQRN PBZRF HC YNGRE GUVF IBYHZR unun]

Well, at least this summary tells us this volume will contain Touya's "jealous teammates" trying to "put him in his place," WHICH IS WHAT I SHOWED UP FOR.

LIST OF GAMES IN THIS VOLUME:

17 Leave the Go Club! 囲碁部をでてけよ!

19 ¥1,000 a Game 一局千円/a>

22 Hon'inbo Shusaku 本因坊秀策
23 Kimihiro's Concern 筒井の懸念
24 Kaio's Third 海王の三将
25 Preliminary Scrimmage 前哨戦

Okay, NOW ON TO THE STORY. For this entry I'm doing games 17 and 18 because they form a nice little arc. COINCIDENTALLY THIS ARC ALSO CORRESPONDS TO THIS PART OF THE VOLUME 2 KANZENBAN COVER, from these scans provided by [personal profile] verys:

GAME 17: LEAVE THE GO CLUB!

(larger)

Summary: Three of the members of the Kaio Go Club implement their plan to humiliate Touya by forcing him to play blind Go (he's not allowed to look at the board) while cleaning a storage room. Touya goes along with it because he's obsessing over Shindou AS USUAL and wants to prove he's "the best." He beats the first kid, so then they make him play two at a time and he starts sweating and messing up because he's thrown off by dumb mirror-Go-playing-kid's crappy play.

MY COMMENTS + SCANS:

(larger)

I guess it's important to edit the Japanese text on the cover of this one random book shown in close-up into English, but every other book and item on these shelves is still left in Japanese, ha.

Also, in a larger omake in this volume, Hotta mentions that the room depicted here is na npghny vey pyho ebbz (abg fgbentr ebbz un) funerq ol obgu n Tb naq Fubhtv pyho. V YBIR GUVF, vg'f fb zrffl naq jnl zber yvxr jung V'q rkcrpg fhpu n ebbz gb ybbx yvxr. Nyfb ybir gur enaqbz boivbhf fubhtv fghss lbh pna frr gbb.

Also Touya looks so little and cute and nonplussed in this last panel. <3

(larger)

(larger)

Touya is just ttly off in his own world daydreaming about CREATING NEW JOSEKI with Shindou (hem hem) and doesn't even notice his senpai dreaming up plots to abuse him behind his back. Love it.

(larger)

unf unf that's right Touya, DO EVERYTHING THE UPPERCLASSMEN TELL YOU TO DO *creepy face*

Also on this page (p.13), TO ANY JAPANESE SPEAKERS, I'm curious whether the line "unlike shougi, the go board is very wide" is translated well or not, as it seems to be kind of vague. (Like, I know what they mean, the size of the grid and all, but you could have a Shougi board that was 8x wider than a Go board just by making the grid more spaced out and having bigger pieces haha.)

A RANDOM NOTE: Hikago is lucky/benefits from not having a ton of sfx all the time in the panels. LET ME TELL YOU, AHEM, SPEAKING FROM OOFURI, IT CAN MAKE THINGS WEIRD WHEN YOU TRY TO TRANSLATE THEM ALL INTO ENGLISH. I guess Viz could keep using "FSHHHHHH" all the time though haha.

(larger)

Oh Touya, he made you think of Shindou so you had to take the bait, huh? ;p

On page 16 there's a footnote here they took out of the English version, but I bet it's just explaining about how "even game" means no handicaps or whatever.

(larger)

"Touya's probably eating dirt right now!" Haha is this a literal translation? If not, WTH VIZ THAT'S SUCH AN AWK TURN OF PHRASE TO USE HERE. Of course now I'm thinking about Touya being forced to eat dirt though sigh. If you're already tying up his hands and feet you may as well take him outside and ground his face down into the mud while having your way with him making him play go, I guess. XD

(larger)

There's another footnote taken out of the Viz version here. I wonder if it was explaining what a win by resignation means.

Also, oh look Viz actually left senpai in English this time (with a little explanatory note), ha. VIZ YOUR TRANSLATION DECISIONS BAFFLE ME.

(larger)

Such intense art of yelling faces, I love it. <3

Although why is this one goke taller than the other one? IS THAT A THING?

(On the next page the lengths of touya's limbs look kinda wonky.)

(larger)

OH TOUYA YOUR FACE IS STARTING TO LOOK DISTRESSED HERE ON P27 AND I LOVE IT

(larger)

Omake: From the Japanese I can see that like, one nasal and one syllable were added to this dialogue in the bubble at bottom. But in the Viz version they change nothing so it says "Obata might tweak the dialogue" but there are not apparent tweaks to be seen, ha.

ETA: I found this old upload I had of this scene as done in the anime! So if you want to compare, I have added it in here as well. :3 password = hikago

(direct link)

AND THAT ENDS GAME 17!!! WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT??? WILL THEY FINALLY ACTUALLY TIE TOUYA UP AND HAVE THEIR WAY WITH HIM??? THE THRILLING CONCLUSION, RIGHT NOW.

GAME 18: IF ONLY YOU WEREN'T HERE

And with this chapter I started doing more resizing of scans in photoshop so I wouldn't have to bother with linking to resizing of them, so they might just be smaller SORRY.

Summary: The dub-con Kaio Go Club plot to bully Touya goes into full swing. Touya sweats on his face and clenches his fists. Tragically Thankfully, Yuri-senpai walks in on this event and cuts the bullying off, giving everyone a firm telling-to. Back at Haze, Shindou recruits Kaneko to the Go Club, but she's in the vollyball club and plus they need a third boy to play in the tournament. They talk about putting up a poster to recruit someone. Returning to Kaio, Kishimoto, the Go Club president, is like "blah blah Touya why did you join the Go Club it's demoralizing everyone" and Touya is like, "ONLY I CAN FACE MY ETERNAL GO RIVAL BOYFRIEND!" Like he does. Krim is left sobbing and pondering the non-con bondage Go Touya gangbang that could have been.

MY COMMENTS + SCANS:

unf unf you mess up Touya's rhythm there

HA, SO IN THIS CHAPTER WE FINALLY GET INTO THAT DUBIOUSLY CONSENSUAL ABUSIVE GO BULLYING, which is like, why very thought I should do this volume haha. I have previously also made a screencap entry about this scene in the anime. Basically, it is what I like to call TOUYA NO GANGBANG. [personal profile] hostilecrayon and I also once had a great conversation about this. IT'S A LITTLE LONG AND A LITTLE PORNY SO I'LL LINK IT OVER ON PASTBIN INSTEAD.

Anyway nowadays I would probably make it a lot more non-con than in that conversation haha. :D

Haha, this kid (Ito? I am way too lazy to remember names of characters who only show up in like three chapters, sorry) is such an S. Love it.

ALSO, LIVING FOR THE OBVIOUS DISTRESS ON TOUYA'S FACE THERE IN THAT SECOND PANEL, WOW!

So then Yuri the senpai shows up, and see, I remember her name, b/c I always lol at senpais named Yuri. XD (ALSO SHE TOTES NEEDS TO HOOK UP WITH TOUYA TOO, AS I STATED IN COMMENTS TO ONE OF THE PREVIOUS VOLUME POSTS!) Anyway Yuri gives Touya a dose of HARSH REALITY:

Damn Touya your hurt face is so beautiful.

But then Yuri-senpai amends,

WHAT A GOOD SENPAI

Right so then we swap back to Haze and I had totes forgotten before re-reading this game that Hikaru did think of that crossdressing idea himself haha, but not with Akari. NICE ONE HIKARU

Then this convo with Touya and Kishimoto, and I was like, "WAIT WASN'T THAT KISHIMOTO BEFORE WITH THE LIGHT HAIR AND GLASSES?? suddenly his hair is dark tho and he looks different. maybe it was a different character or maybe they changed him??? i should rewatch the anime ep of that earlier scene to see if kishimoto is in it."

I WAS CONFUSED B/C EARLIER THERE WAS A DUDE IN THE KAIO GO CLUB AND FOR SOME REASON I THOUGHT IT WAS KISHIMOTO BUT IT TOTALY WASN'T. So I preserved my dumbness here for your entertainment.

And of course Touya closes out Game 18 with his usual BLAH BLAH EPIC GO ROMANCE BLAH

Viz: FWSH

Touya what are your shoes. this manga reread is actually leading me, with my previous pure eternal love for touya's fashion sense, to start side-eying his choices more often OH NO WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME

We know a little bit about him. From the Gorgeous, with my comments in parentheses:

1996 December:
Around this time, became an insei.
(Kishimoto is an 11-year-old sixth-year elementary school student).

1997 April:
Began schooling at Kaiou Middle School.

1998 February:
Around this time, quit being an insei.
(This means he is now eligible to play in tournaments, although he doesn't).
(The First Kita Middle School Winter Term Go Tournament occurs).

(1998 April:
(Began second year at Kaiou Middle School.)

(1998 June:
(Second Kita Middle School Summer Term Go Tournament occurs).

(1999 February:
(Third Kita Middle School Winter Term Go Tournament occurs. Kishimoto does not participate).

(1999 April:
(Began third year at Kaiou Middle School.)

1999 May:
Played a game against Akira. Lost by resignation.
(The Gorgeous says May, but everyone is wearing summer uniforms at this point so I would have thought it to take place in June instead. There are a few errors in the Gorgeous; I don't know if this is an error, but I personally think this match happened in June, not May).

(1999 June:
(Played as Kaiou's first board in the Fourth Kita Middle School Summer Term Go Tournament).

HAH HAHAHA I forgot how dumb the go bullying is. It's still bullying, but it's so GEEKY and ridiculous.

May I suggest instead of ROT13-ing spoilers you put black highlighting over the verboten text instead? I don't wanna install another add-on and I don't use Firefox anyway. (Wah wah wah accommodate meeeeee.)

Did you notice that Yuri-senpai is totally stacked? It's not so obvious in the b&w manga panels but it sure is obvious in the kanzenban cover.

I think I'm going to have to leave a million comments; this one is already ridick long and I only just started :(

ALSO I LOVE YOUR POSTS THEY ARE AWESOME

omg hyperventilating at how adorable the idea of Hikaru and Akira playing pair go against Sai and Hotta-sensei is

Yeah, that's a good point--there totally is a dearth of pair-go fic. NEXT FIC CHALLENGE GOOOOOO~

Viz's volume summaries and series summaries are preeeeeeeetty bad.

Here's Volume 2's cover copy:

"With sure and steady moves, Sai and Hikaru are making a name for Hikaru Shindo as the one who might possible beat the venerable Akira Toya. Wait. Who are we kidding? Hikaru: sure and steady...? Yeah, right! In between all the shenanigans Hikaru gets himself into during school and after, and dealing with Sai's unhappy sobs when Hikaru tries to run away from playing go, his fame is growing. Principals, teachers and go tournament kids alike are all wondering who this unruly bronco of a go player is. Tetsuo, a shogi punk who has a beef of his own with Akira, harasses poor Hikaru at first--then later puts him on his own go team! Meanwhile, Akira, looking for a rematch with Hikaru, is surprised to find Hikaru playing with a third-rate go club. You won't be disappointed with the further adventures of this dynamic duo!"

uhhhhhh

Okay, I tracked down other quotes I pulled out the last time I was looking at volume summaries:

charmingly describing go as a "strategically complex board game"; yeah, that's how you hook the kids.

"Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth grader in Japan: a pretty normal schoolboy with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics."

PENCHANT FOR ANTICS awwww grandma I told you I didn't need your help writing these!!

"As tensions rise, the antagonism between both teams culminates in a telling match between Akira and Hikaru. Who will win? Which team will win? Even if the answer surprises you, the ensuing drama won't."

so... the drama is totally predictable? Yep, sounds like a great read to me I will totally put down money to buy this comic book OH HEY IS THAT THE NEW NARUTO I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT KIND OF EXCITING FIGHTS HE GETS INTO THIS VOLUME.

Touya is just ttly off in his own world daydreaming about CREATING NEW JOSEKI with Shindou

OH MAN MY FAVOURITE LINE OF YOUR WHOLE REREAD

The line "Unlike shogi, the go board is very wide" is adapted from 「…碁は将棋とちがって盤面が広い」, which does mean "...Go differs from shogi in that the board is wide." It is kind of a vague statement :(

Oh man you do realise that now we need to do like some sort of Hikago SFX Count to determine rates of usage. Ahhhhh I totally want to see this pie-chart! And contrasting between the original and the Viz! And more charts discussing the differences!

One of my favourite special features in the Gorgeous is the "GATA!! Scene Selection" where it shows seven scenes where Akira's bursting into movement and making a "GATA!" noise (spoiler warning: they all involve Shindou XD). We could totally make our own scene selections XD

Right on the nose about the footnote! (互先…ハンデなしの対局); (Tagaisen: a game without a handicap).

Viz is ALL ABOUT the weird awkward turns of phrase that seriously no one uses ever. The original is 「そろそろ塔矢苦しんでるかな」 which is just something like "Touya's feeling pained right about now, I bet"; "kurushii" is "painful". I could get it if Viz used "eating dirt" in a different context for some other line like "We're gonna make Touya eat dirt", but it just sounds so awk here :(

Bang on again about the missing footnote; (中押し…途中で一方が投了して勝負が決まる碁のこと); (Chuuoshi: Where a game is decided by one party resigning the match midway).

Oh man, the "senpai" note. Viz just seems so of two minds when it comes to what they want to present and what they don't; "Onegai shimasu" baffles me in an adaptation so thoroughly Americanized, and since they've thrown the original forms of address out the window, why use "senpai" instead of just using Kojima's name? This is a little ALL ACCORDING TO KEIKAKU for me T.T

Huh, I dunno about the different box sizes; I'd never noticed that before. As far as bowl-type goke go, I thought they were supposed to match each other in size, despite white stones and black stones being different sizes. I know you can get sets of bowls in different sizes to accomodate different thicknesses of stones; since this is a school go club, my thought is that maybe they have a dog's breakfast of thicknesses mixed up all over the place (at one point 7mm stones were purchased, then 9mm, then 11mm...) and the boxes are mixed up as well. That's all I got XD Anyone else wanna theorize on this?

OH MAN about the change in Ichikawa's "Look, you're getting all wet!", what a TRAGEDY the distinction was lost in the translation! Ichikawa's dialogue as tweaked by Obata-sensei reads as quite distinctly feminine and sexy; just think of the way she sighs and exaggerates her speech (with rising and falling intonations) in the anime when she's speaking to/waxing on about Akira-kun and you'll have a perfectly good idea of how the feeling was changed here--which explains why Hotta-sensei looks just a little scandalised in her thumbnail picture! <3

Nana to Kaoru is about Kaoru, a BDSM loving teenage boy, and his neighbour Nana, who discovers just how much she loves being dominated. It's a very sweet, wistful, romantic will-they-or-won't-they sort of deal that I'm super addicted to; scanlations are available on MangaTraders, but this is a pretty representative page when I think of Nana to Kaoru being just crammed full of sfx and text boxes and words of every sort XD

also this is totally not the "Sai" I was thinking of when I clicked that icon description XD

On a totally unrelated note, "chuuoshi" is used about as much as you'd imagine in Japanese fandom as a play-on-words for kissing ("chuu" being the sound effect for kissing and often used to mean the kiss itself, and "osu" meaning in this context to press) so that is pretty awesome.

oh sorry I mentioned "chuuoshi" since it was the missing footnote on page 19; HikaGo itself doesn't make use of any play-on-words for that (since the manga is pretty sexless aside from Sai's early shipping, Akari's obvious crush on Hikaru, Hikaru's desire not to be seen as part of a couple with Akari, the go salon patrons commenting that Ichikawa needs a boyfriend to take her mind off Akira, Nase's date, and please anyone jump in to list any other incidents you can think of because HikaGo's really interesting to me for its lack of kissing and junk) but fandom does XD I've seen it in a few fics, a few doujinshi stories, and there's an anthology series put out by Hiland called "Kimi ni CHUU Oshi" (translating roughly to "Resigning to You" or "Kissing You").

In Game 29, "zelda", XD Ichikawa's bummed because her little Akira-kun is becoming a man taking the pro test, and when she gets worked up talking to Kitajima, Hirose, and the other patrons of the salon, eventually Hirose-san says 「市河さん 市河さんにお似合いの男の人紹介してあげようか」 (Ichikawa-san, shall I introduce you to a suitable man?), adapted PERFECTLY by Viz as "Harumi, how about I introduce you to a really nice guy?"

Regarding the 'senpai' note: My guess would be they felt the need to fill the missing footnote with something. So they were like "hey let's just use senpai this once, explain it, then we don't have a randomly empty footnote box and the kiddies get a language lesson. Win-win!"

Or something XD

What I find weird - especially when comparing to the box etc, is there is available space outside of the panels already - you could have moved sweat drop panel up slightly and you have that corner there, all available to add your text box....

Except they added that big garish ugly box :( (HikaGo's original footnotes are pretty much exclusively done by marking the text to be footnoted with a komejirushi and then writing the note in the white space between panels).

Pretty much any time you see big white boxes like that in HikaGo (particularly with hand-drawn sides and not ruler-straight sides; Obata-sensei uses some boxes for monologues early on in the series) it's something Viz's added because they didn't feel like retouching the art in that particular situation (I have no idea how they decide this; sometimes they'll retouch art I think is objectively more complicated than art they'll just shove a box over, and later in the series when sales numbers were terrible and the translation was slapdash and they were putting out books with a teensy credited staff compared to earlier books, they'll all of a sudden go on a redrawing tear.)

...And now I realise I need to make a chart of the redrawer/touch-up artists for each volume XD

It is really almost strange that there aren’t more Touya gangbang fic from that particular instance. Hikaru no go fandom is actually surprisingly unkinky when you think about it. But if it did happen it probably would involve resentful go people somehow.

The go club bullying really is the worst bullying plot ever. Oh noes, he was forced to play go!! Plus, bragging right about winning hinges a lot on Touya’s honesty. If he was to lose and then say “Psss, no way I lost to those losers” I am pretty sure the world would believe him. And the rest of the go club would probably question where the hell this game that they won was played. Obviously not in the club room where everyone else plays their games. “Hey, I just won a game against Touya Akira. In, uhh, the store room…” Yeah that sounds legit. I don’t think they thought this cunning scheme trough very well.

Aww Yuri sempai! I really thought that we would see much more from her and it saddened me we didn’t. She is arrogant and awesome and in some way that I can’t define she reminds me of Lina Inverse which means instant love! Also Yuri and Touya is an awesome pairing! Apparently I have a thing for hooking up Touya with people who would push him around.

Hahah, yeah, I totally understand that she yelled at him. There is a point where it stops being about pride and starts just being really, really stupid. Crazy proud just runs in the family I guess!

Man, I wish there was a newsletter!! Just look how useful it is for him to have people yelling in his face. Obviously this is exactly what he needs!!
